Seeking a write up or help of some sort on raising a 2004 170 Montauk console three to four inches. Found some posts from 10 years ago and interested how [the modification of the console by raising it four inches] held up. As well, I am hoping more people have done this. Any help is very much appreciated!

I don't think there has been any particular breakthrough in technique in the past ten years for raising the height of a center console on a Boston Whaler boat. The method used ten years ago seems to be still a good method. The ten-year-old method employs some lumber fitted between the deck and the console.

As for the console of a 170 MONTAUK, can you mention the link or links to prior discussions on raising that boat's console. I know the classic MONTAUK console has been raised in several boats.

Also, how tall are you? Most of the guys raising the console are taller than 6-foot 2-inches, in my experience.

Here is a good view of a raised console showing how a large piece of lumber has been fabricated as a riser:

This is on jechura (Jerry's) fine OUTRAGE 22.

If the boat battery is installed in the console, the usual modification is to cut an opening in the floor of the console so the weight of the battery is on the deck instead of on the console floor. See

Here is what we did on my boat with black starboard. This is the Montauk size console albeit on an Outrage 25.

It worked well.

Nice work and I like the radar arch/wake tower. I have had Martin Designs fabricate some items out of starboard for one of my restoration projects, they always do a great job... above and beyond.

See item #12 on that link. It was a 3" raise with three pieces of 1" starboard.

I'm only 5'8" and really prefer the raised console. I drive the boat nearly always standing up and it is more comfortable for me raised.

The work shown in the photographs (linked above to THE HULL TRUTH site) show some really fine work by Martin Marine Design. They look like very good custom fabricators. So good, in fact, it has got me thinking about taking my boat down there for some work. However, when I see the prices, I will probably change my mind.

I have a 2005 170 Montauk that I was thinking of raising the console height on using 1.5" white Starboard.

Although I would probably never spend the money on this, I also think raising the Montauk 170 console a couple of inches would improve the overall proportions/appearance of the boat.

Ray Martin does top quality work and this is just another example.

Wow thanks everyone!!! I'm getting my 2004 170 from a friend for 8500 bucks next week! Runs great, fortunately he bought a new Parker and this thing just sits. I'm 6,4 so I'm really hoping raising the console is as simple as building a frame of the console and screwing the frame into the original console holes then attaching the console to the frame!

I personally think a frame build from a 4x4 block of teak would look better than one built from Starboard. The same tools would be used to build it.

$8,500 for 2005 170 is a great price! Enjoy your 170 Montauk it is a great 17 footer...

Rich, starboard stays with the no wood, no maintenance theme of the 170 Montauk - I love the teak and mahogany of classic Whaler's but honestly on the 170 Montauk it would seem out of place.

Yep! It's a good buddy of mine, was originally asking 10k but came down to 8500. Nada says 10k for low value and 17 suggested retail.

I don't have the montauk outside that I can go measure, but to use the original holes would you have to make the hardware longer to connect the 4 inch starboard or teak to the deck? Or maybe a bracket would be used? Also what's the best way to
Attach the spacer frame to the actual console?
