On my 1990 Boston Whaler REVENGE 22 Whaler Drive there are three hatches on the aft deck. In the c.1990 model year the hatches are covered by teak hatch covers. The hatch covers are not watertight, because they have large finger hole openings. The teak hatches do not seal water tight. There are no gaskets or seals. The treatment of the three hatch opening is not consistent. The hatch opening on the Starboard side has been molded with a gutter, and there is a drain on the gutter. The other two hatch openings do not have gutters molded into their openings. I have given some thought to why only the Starboard hatch would have the gutter. All I can conclude is to speculate that perhaps the designer thought that the boat would tend to sit with a slight list to Starboard. This seems to be the assumption on all Boston Whaler boats, as they generally always have their cockpit sump on the Starboard side. A list to Starboard would probably occur from the location of the engine starting battery on the Starboard side. Thus, if the boat has a slight list to Starboard, perhaps water on the aft deck will tend to flow toward the Starboard hatch and accumulate there. The gutter on the hatch opening would then drain the water away. Does this sound like a reasonable theory for why only the Starboard hatch has a gutter and drain? On my Whaler Drive the drain on the Starboard hatch gutter seems to be blocked. Water does not flow into the drain very fast, it at all. There is a hose attached to it--not a rubber hose but a rather stiff and inflexible small diameter plastic hose. That hose seems to run into the transom. I am not sure where it exits from the transom. I would expect that it might go overboard, but there is no sign of an exit on the outside of the transom. I have not tried to clear the drain with a snake or any drain cleaner. Where does this drain go?

One possible route for the rain gutter drain to drain on the Starboard hatch of the aft deck of a Whaler Drive 22-footer might be into the top of the large diameter through-hull aft-facing drain through the transom. This semi-flexible plastic hose could have been installed into the top of the large drain, then laminated into place on the transom as the transom was being reworked for the Whaler Drive. I will have to take a mirror and look into the Starboard large deck drain going through the transom to see if there is any sign of the hose exit from the rain gutter. I have inquired with Chuck Bennett on this, and he did not have an answer off the top of his head. He is going to check to see if he can find anything about the single rain gutter design and where the drain goes |

It sounds like you don't have baitwells under your hatches. Do you think maybe your gutter drains route the water to the boat's center well where it drains or is pumped out? |

The Starboard hatch with gutter has a drain that does not lead to anywhere obvious; its drain hose it goes into the laminate of the transom as I described above and to a possible drain, as I speculated above. I have the optional center live well insert; it has no drain at all, and clearly the other hatch does not drain into it. The Port hatch has no gutter on the opening. It has no insert. I am not aware that there was any option for inserts for these smaller Port and Starboard aft deck hatches. There is no drain for the non-existent gutter or the non-existent live well insert for the Port hatch. To clarify, as I sense there is a lot of confusion, these hatches are on the aft deck, not on the aft cockpit sole. |

I heard from Chuck Bennett. He could not find any drawings on the drain and the gutters. Polling all the old-timers did not come up with any recollections. I will have to investigate this further in the Spring, when the boat thaws out. |

That one was built on Friday!Possibly that location was to be the bait well and outside water was not desired, and was channeled off? Good Luck! |
