In the process of converting my [1987] SUPER SPORT 17 to a Super-Tauk with a 12-gallon Moeller fuel tank on deck, under a lean post type seat, and it never had a thru-deck opening for the fuel line to the stern. I'll make a minimal 1.5-inch x 3-inch oval opening thru deck on [the center line of the rigging] tunnel, but instead of using a metal or plastic hawsepipe fitting, I'd like to slightly radius the deck edge of the oval cut out, and then fair it with a few layers of fiberglass cloth and West System, extending the fairing down and into the aluminum tunnel. I think it would look better and not create a water dam effect that would otherwise occur with a metal or plastic hawsepipe fitting. [Give your] opinions [and] comments.

Just a thought: have you researched that topic yet? If memory serves me correctly, there have been several projects similar to what you are planning to do.

By research, I'm guessing you mean doing a search here at CW? I've found threads discussing where and how to make the thru-deck opening, and the availability of the Boston Whaler part, which a form of does exist thru [a retailer], but I'm interested to see if others might have improved the basic idea.

Check with Whaler if there is an existing tube glassed under the deck. On my 2000 17 Alert, converting it into a Montauk-Guardian was easy. The tunnel already existed and the installing dealer just needed to cut a hole into the deck at the forward end of the tunnel and glassed and gel-coated the edges. There was a smooth spot in the nonskid showing where to cut.

Use a length of PVC for the tunnel--it will not rot--and just fiberglass right over it. This gives you a tunnel and you have the ability to change out things. Also by using PVC you have numberous different type fittings for each end. Good luck
