I'm still looking at ideas to replace that couch in the back of my 88 Revenge 20 WT. I'm thinking one of those pick up truck boxes might fit the bill. I can use it for lockable storage for all the tackle and with a cushion you can sit on it. With those sides designed to fit over a trucks rails I would still have access to my tunnel opening. Has anyone done this? Looking for a way to secure it to the deck. Thanks

Will weight be an issue? Are they available in aluminum so corrosion will be less of a problem than with steel? I believe I've seen some that are weather tight. Would you attach cushions with snaps as with cooler seats?

I've never seen it done but I would imagine that even with aluminum corrosion will be a problem, especially on the bottom and rear. Eventually the box would turn white from surface oxidation.

Seems to me a right sized fiberglass dock box might better serve your purposes. You could even add a partition and have a nice cooler along with extra storage.

hopefully not in a Whaler. Then you can complete the job and add a 6 ft. aluminum stepladder in front of the console and call it a "tower".

How about a nice big Rubbermaid tote?

I like Binkster's idea. Then put a fiberglass pickup truck cap backwards in the front and call it a cabin.

Hahaha funny guys. Yes in a whaler. I only use this boat for salmon fishing on Lake Ontario and that couch takes up allot of room and is getting damaged from all the newbies jumping all over it to get to the rods. I figured a plastic or aluminum truck box may fit in there. I can then use it to store all the tackle and be able to lock it up instead of filling the cuddy with all the tackle. A couple of snaps and a cushion would protect the knees when you try and grab a rod. I was just hoping someone had done this. My boat is still covered so i'm not sure how wide it is between the gunnels.

If the box wasn't built in a Whaler-like manner, and looked like it was a natural part of the boat then jimh would delete it.

Got my truck box roughed in. Gonna paint it white in the winter to make it look nicer. It fit in there with an inch to spare on either side. I removed the front 2x6 underneath and now have another place to slide in tackle trays. Nice to have something the newbie fishers can jump all over and be able to lock away all my gear at the same time! Added that trolling bar last week! Boat is a salmon chasing machine now:)
