I just ordered a new rub rail from Sue at Twin Cities Marine for my 99 Outrage 20ft.
Last summer at Lake Powell, I took some rub rail damage to a point that it can't be sanded out so its a new one.
The reason it happened is some of the docks are so high you are looking at them above the rub rail by 10 inches to two feet. Very difficult to die up bumpers to protect against such high and exposed docks.
I use the bow rail on the forward part of the boat because it lifts the bumper higher. On the rear I need some better ideas because I can't get the bumper high enough
Any ideas from anyone on how you tie up to awkward or high docks that are waiting to scratch up your rubrail?

How about rigging a couple flexible (pvc pipes - small diameter?) as standoffs. Sorta like flexible non-liftng davits... I've seen boats docked with commercial versions of this type of protection. Keeps the boat just far enough away from the dock to prevent contact, but not too far to prevent boarding or leaving the boat...

It depends on the actual height of the docks, but you can raise the height of your stern fenders by using a wooden dowel inserted into your rod holder. Drill holes at the top end of the dowel and tie your fender line to that. Helps a little. The other thing I've done at very tall docks if there is no other boat traffic is to look for the lee side of the dock as much as possible and also you could anchor off the far side of the boat and make the line fast to your midship cleat to help hold you off the dock.
Floating docks rule.

Spring lines can handle most situations. Fender boards may help in your situation though storage can be a problem on small boats. Crossed mooring lines very carefully adjusted for length can also keep you off a fixed dock while allowing more range of movement.
A little experimenting will get you there.
