My 13 ft sourpuss with a Johnson 48SPL is super-stern heavy and I have to keep the motor trimmed totally in to keep the bow down as much as possible and avoid pounding. If the motor is trimmed level or square to the boat, at only 3500 rpm, I'm bouncing up and down big time. Forget about trying to open it up to 4000-5000. Not much weight to redistribute toward the front: maybe the battery and that's it. Thinking about trim tabs. Any other ideas for a more level ride? Thanks.

Try some lead dive weights in the bow locker. |

Assuming that you have the correct shaft length, and engine mounted so anti-vent plate is above the keel: It has been my experience that a Doel-fin, Sting-Ray or other hydrofoil will assist in leveling off. The boat will plane sooner, and stay on plane at a lower speed than without the hydrofoil, giving you better control of your trim. Especially if you want to keep the bow down. Some of these hydrofoils even are available requiring no drilling, although I have always used one that does require drilling, which is not a big deal. We have had our 13 Super Sport powered by a 40 Johnson, and now a 30 E-TEC. Both have been equipped with a Sting-Ray Jr. which has worked very well.

Thanks loads for the hydrofoil info. Will shop for best model, etc. Have only had my BW a few months. Incredible boat aside from this very fixable issue. |

in addition, consider raising the stern thwart seat to be on the side supports, the extra couple of inches makes the boat far more comfortable and will let you put the gas tanks underneath them (and maybe the battery too) . those 40/48/50 OMCs are really too heavy for that hull, but moving the gas and battery forward even those few feet can really help |

Smart idea. Higher stern seat also easier on old guys' knees. Thanks tons !!! |

In addition to screwing the rear seat to the top of the seat risers to give you 4" more room under the seat, to provide for the fuel tank and the battery, move the entire interior forward 6". Doing that and installing a hydrofoil will completly change the riding carectoristics of the 13' Whaler. Another thing make sure the cavitation plate on the lower unit is about 1" above the keel.rich |
