I bought a used 2004 220 Dauntless and I need to buy a trailer for the boat. What are your thoughts about the PVC upright guides which are mounted at the rear of a boat trailer? I have never used this type of guide before and I would like to know if you think I need them for this boat's new trailer. Thanks.

I use PVC upright guides on every trailered boat Iv'e had for the past 30 years. Once you get used to the convenience you don't want to be without them. I assume that they will be built using 2" PVC. They will be alot more ridged if you go the Home Depot and buy 1 1/2" wood closet pole and drop the pieces down inside the PVC.

Adding tall PVC guide posts to my trailer was a great improvement.

You don't need them but they do help.

I guess even boats with lower gunnels will benefit from the uprights. I will install the uprights on the trailer. Thanks.

Yes, you want them. It makes backing an unloaded trailer much easier with the increased visibility, loading the boat is easier, particular in windy conditions, and you have the option of installing "pipe lights" so that your tail lights at the top of post and out of the water when you launch.

They are critical if you have a cross current, either steady,
or due to wave action.

I have yet to find anyone who could tell me why I don't want the uprights. So, I ordered the trailer with the uprights.

This thread inspired me to finally order a set (from Ve-Ve, Inc.) for the trailer under my classic 16 foot Whaler. It is a small price to pay to reduce the drama inherent in launching and retrieving.

One of the most satisfying upgrades I've installed!
