posted 04-04-2014 08:56 AM ET (US) I found, or was shown, a great product for removing rust stains on fiberglass. The product is called "On & Off Gel". It is a green, gelatinous product that is best applied directly to the rust stain with a stiff brush. Leave it for about 15-20 minutes and reapply. Work the stain with the brush for a minute or so. Wipe off with a damp or wet cloth and most rust stains will be gone. The more stubborn stains may require several treatments. It will not harm fiberglass. I flushed the area with water after I cleaned the rust stains to make sure the product was removed.
My 1977 Montauk had some rust stains that had been on the boat for decades because the previous owner used some non-stainless screws and bolts. I had tried many different products with very limited success. A boat dealer friend gave me some of the On & Off Gel and I removed all of the rust stains in about 45 minutes.
The only caveat is; be careful not to get any on your skin. While it won't do any quick, severe damage, the product obviously has some acid in it and will begin to burn on skin. As stated above, I rinsed the boat well and also rinsed the towel used as a precaution.

Thanks. I just bought a 220 2004 Dauntless which has some rust stains on it and I was wondering how to best remove them. I will try this product. By the way, some stainless will rust when exposed to salt water.

The gel is good but the liquid version is stronger and will take rust and yellowing off in seconds,it works on stainless steel also.Be careful it is an acid and will bleach out paints, varnish and galvanized steel trailers. Our boatyard sprays the hulls and bottoms at the end of the season to remove the rust/yellowing before putting them away for the offseason. It is also called on-off HULL ACID by MARYKATE.
