What [on-deck fuel tanks] are now running on the 170 Montauk? I've read about a 28-gallon Moeller (about $150) and a 22-gallon Moeller that I've found for $250. Trying to save cash while replacing my 6.5-gallon tanks. Recommend a tank that will fit under my 170 RPS. Really want to have one tank and not two tanks.

I understand the Boston Whaler tanks they depict isn't for your specific model but it looks like they offer a nice out of the box product and they are also willing to modify the tank to your specs.

I do not know of any survey taken among owners of 170 MONTAUKs to discover what fuel tank is being used.
The number of makers of on-deck portable fuel tanks has declined in the past few years. This decline is probably a result of more stringent regulations covering fuel tanks and evaporative emissions put in place by the EPA. Probably the most common single tank used is the Moeller 22 gallon (fka 24 gallon) White Topside tank made for this Whaler.

MIRAX can make you are size or shape tank you want, but some of their standard sizes would work too. These aluminum tanks are much stronger but will cost quite a but more.

I bought the Moeller 22-gallon fuel tank when it first released. The fuel cap leaked gas but Moeller quickly mailed me a new cap and problem was solved. Anyway, the 22-gallon tank has more than enough capacity for my type of boating in the bay. Plus the white color makes it very integrated with the boat.

Have a custom Alum fuel tank made out of .125, Never have to worry about a tank again.

On the to 170 Montauks that I have had - I also used the 22 Gallon White Topside Fuel Tank. One tank had a leaky cap the other one no issues.

I have the same 22(24) Moeller as everyone else. I also had a cap problem in that the built in fuel gauge dial broke (it actually was pretty accurate for a crappy simple mechanical gauge).
However, I had a lot of trouble getting a replacement - Moeller doesn't manufacture the caps - I got pointed to the company that did who told me they don't sell retail - after a bunch of other runaround I finally located one, but it should not have been that hard.
Part of the problem was that the same cap/fuel gauge comes in many different lengths to accommodate different tank depths. The length is not stamped on the assembly and it's not clear where it's being measured to (top of the cap, bottom of the cap, etc). That also caused me some time.
I link the tank and it fits under the RPS perfectly but this cap runaround gave me a bad taste.

I think that when this tank first came out they had issues with the fuel gauge/cap - Moeller was not much help but the replacement gauges/cap are manufactured by Kelch.

The replacement gauge is vented 2 ¼" threaded cap with a 12¼" float depth Kelch part number #7J203085 / BlueSkies part number #BK0130002 cost is $23.45.
They ship from Wisconsin and I had mine in NJ in two days.
FYI if your not that concerned about the accuracy of the empty reading then the shorter 10" gauge works fine and is only $14.63 -

That's great information - I got a real attitude from Kelch wholesale suggesting how dare I call them on a piddly retail matter.
