I *used to* have an 8hp kicker on my Montauk. The outboard was mounted directly to the transom with stainless bolts.
First someone tried to unscrew the bolts and steal the kicker, but must have run out of time, and I found it hanging by a thread. Next I used two McGard outboard motor locks, with rotating collars. But now they finally succeeded at stealing the kicker at night. All I can figure is they used some freon to freeze the McGards, then cracked them off; this technique is used on bicycle locks as I understand.
I realize that nothing will stop a determined thief, but does anyone have any more suggestions for slowing them down besides a garage. I suppose I could not leave the kicker on the boat, but not as convenient.

Use nuts like you have on fancy wheels for lug-nuts/bolts.
Or there is hardware available for bolts and nuts that can only turn CW for tighter not lefty losie.
I have an old Fisherman 6HP (Evinrude) short shaft for cheap if you need a "new" kicker OB.

Either in the garage, or when your use the stainless bolts again use super glue on the aircraft nuts, you have to cut them off to get the engine off. Motion alarm/camera facing the boat or in the boat. Heads up if a thief wants your engine he/she will get it, unless you have it guarded 24/7 or lock up in a garage.....Good luck to you

Repaint the cowling of your auxiliary engine with some strange pastel blue, green, and cream colors from the 1960's, and have some new decals made that say MONTGOMERY WARDS 3-HP. This should reduce the curb appeal of your outboard engine.

For less than $100 you can get a solar powered motion sensor lite,,Its very bright and along with a game camera you might get a pic of them running away

Smith & Wesson offer products that are pretty effective in theft prevention, but they function manually and require night duty.

I once stored a Whaler, my Outrage 18, in a space accessible to the public. It was on a pier here in Seattle at a popular restaurant. Dozens of trailer boats were stored there, most with kicker motors. The kickers were routinely stolen.
One summer my boat was the only one with a kicker that did not get stolen. My technique was to use 5/8" galvanized chain that looped around on the of the pier's lateral timbers and back to the kicker motor on my Whaler which was backed against the steel railing.
A bicycle lock wrapped around the lower unit and engaged the loop of chain through multiple links. The chain was also fed though the frame of the trailer.
I found jaw marks on that chain where thieves had tried to use bolt cutters on it, but it was simply too large.

To add to boatdryver's reply; Colt, Ruger, Browning, Glock and several other companies manufacture very effective theft deterrent products. The use of these products is also very effective in reducing the instance of repeat thefts. For best results, repeated application from these products will limit a thief's likelihood of creating any uncomfortable, time consuming, legal complications for you.
