I will be performing maintenance which requires lifting the 90-HP Evinrude E-TEC motor from my transom. I plan on using the built-in loop at the top of the motor, not the (obscure and expensive) special tool Evinrude recommends for the purpose. I would like to hear members' first hand experience with this.

Not done with an E-Tec, but with a 70 hp Evinrude. The loops works fine for lifting but the motor will rotate forward some.
I lifted mine with a Come-A-Long from Home Depot attached to an eye bolt over my garage door. Lifted straight up, replaced tilt tube and washers, added a jack-plate, moved trailer slightly forward, and then let the motor back down.
For the 150 hp Optimax's on my Outrage 25, I bought the special tool - I don't even know if there is a loop. But on a big motor I think the straight up and down lifting of the motor is worth the money for the tool especially if you are doing it solo. With a 90 E-Tec the motor is not that big and I'd not worry about the forward rotation.

I have used the loop many times on both our 90s and 60 E-TECs never a problem.

This was discuss here a long time ago, do a search. I use a crow foot shape gear puller with a thread close eye for the lift, 3 bolts at 120 degrees each bolt to the flywheel, and you can lift the engine straight up, safer, better than a strap. Cost about $10-20, at an auto parts store

I used the same type of crows foot gear puller on two 85 Johnson engines off the fly wheel and would recommend this the balance is allot better and they are cheap.

As a follow-up, I can report that using the built-in loop to lift my engine worked just fine. It hung with somewhat of a forward tilt, but I could still easily align the bracket mounting bolt locations to the holes in the transom.

A loop is a belt/strap, trust me on this one go with the crow foot puller
