I have just acquired a beautifully restored 1978 Montauk 17. My dock situation and the fitted Mills cover prevent using the bow fixture for mooring. One solution is to install cleats on the gunwale near the rear bow rail stanchion. I'd welcome any input on cleat installation or other solution. Thanks, Jim

Seems to me the bow and stern eyes on the outside of the hull would allow you to berth your boat at the dock. What am I missing? |

Sorry, not clear. The bow extends about 4 feet from the end of my float. I want to avoid chafing my new Mills (expensive) mooring cover if I bring line over the top or the bow gel coat if I bring the line around and back to the cleat on the dock. I did receive counsel from local pro that no cleats should be installed on gunwale of this boat. My main question was about advisability of adding the gunwale cleats. |

I'm with Tom. Why can't you tie the front bow eye (where the winch strap would attach if the boat was on a trailer not the lifting eye inside the boat on the deck in front of the anchor locker hatch) to the dock? The stern outside lifting/tow eyes could be used to tie the stern to the dock. |

Thanks, guys. I'll try the front bow eye. Hopefully line will clear hull on way to dock cleat. And am planning to use outside lifting eye on stern to tie from there. |
