Ltsimp	posted 05-09-2014 10:26 AM ET (US)      I am seeking advice on a 2001 Mercury Optimax 150 hp that has sat for 2 or 3 years or longer since last running. It is on a 1991 Guardian 19. I was able to get it running with fresh gasoline. New oil in oil tank and hooked up to muffs supplying tap water. My question is how to be sure the oiling system is properly working. I didn't notice any smoke when it ran for the couple minutes I ran it. Should I put it into oil pump prime or break in mode? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
deepwater	posted 05-09-2014 06:32 PM ET (US)             Well its running now so im sure someone with more info about the oiler system will be of more help,,In the furtur if you let it set along time,,Pore some marvel mystery oil in all plug holes and turn it over by hand a few times with the plugs out than add more oil and turn over using the starter,,be sure to cover the plug holes with an old cloth to catch the spray,,Than mix some extra oil and gas in a single small tank along with sea foam and run it ,, I think The auto oiler should have an alarm if its not working

jimh	posted 05-11-2014 01:50 PM ET (US)             I suggest you consult the owner's manual for your outboard engine to see if there are specific recommendations for preparation for long-term lay-up or winter storage. Because modern outboard engines tend to be more complex than those of the 1970's, there may be some special considerations that should be taken in their maintenance. I give preference to recommendations from the manufacturer, particularly with regard to use of specific oils, additives, or treatments, over generic recommendations for those products. Considering the cost of modern outboard engines, a few dollars extra spent to get a specifically recommended product seems like a paltry expense, considering the risk inherent in just using randomly recommended products.
deepwater	posted 05-12-2014 03:13 AM ET (US)             To each his own,,I used the recommended high dollar stuff for years and found sea foam,,,jimh ,,you have pics posted showing what it cleaned out of my motor,,marvel mystery oil has been around longer than most companys and it still does the job of freeing up stuck ANYTHINGS ,,,,,its not a cure all but its been working longer than some new stuff recommended just because its a 2012 or 2013 motor,,,If the manufacture says DO NOT USE,,sea foam or marvel mystery oil that would be one thing,,but they don't,,because they still work in this day and age,,,just me on this subject,,
Ltsimp	posted 05-12-2014 09:56 AM ET (US)          Thank you both for thre commendations. I went ahead and reprimedthe oil pump and now the engine appears to be oiling properly. Little smoke when running and no alarms at all. On to the next item on the list.
