I'm removing a bunch of 5200 on a 1984 15' CC I'm getting ready for sale. There was an excess of this adhesive sealant used to seal the motor / transom penetrations.

I am now using a product called DeBond Marine Formula, which I wish I'd known about before I removed the motor and some gelcoat with it a few years back. Many of you may be familiar with it, but it was news to me. It works by chemically breaking the bond between the 5200 and the surface it is adhered to. It is not a solvent, does not dissolve the 5200, and does not harm the gelcoat. After a 3-5 minute soak time, you can peel the 5200 away from the surface with a little bit of coaxing using a putty knife or epoxy spreader.

Hope this saves someone else some gelcoat work.

Dennis -- Do you have any sense of what the active ingredient in DeBond Marine Formula is?

What is Dipropylene glycol methlyether acetate?

Tom,
No idea, but I can see that this 6th finger I've started to grow might be useful when it gets bigger.

The MDS lists it as only slightly hazardous for health, but as you see the dipropylene glycol methlyether acetate limits have not been established. You really only need a small amount of the product.

Dennis, thank you for this information. This is the first report, I have seen as to the effectiveness of this product.
Thank You

The strength of the adhesive bond of 3M5200 is well documented. Debond has been mentioned before, but Dennis seems to be the first to actually try it and report on it. Thanks.

There is another discussion of 3M 5200 and the removal of transducers bedded in the stuff on Panbo. Debond is mentioned.
