I am replacing the rub rail on my 1999 Outrage 20. Sue from Twin Cities Marine supplies the parts. She's excellent as usual with customer service. The rub rail is the two-part black heavy-duty type. I took my old original one off today, and it was attached with self-tapping screws and a white silicone looking material was used to help hold it on and seal the holes. At least 10 to 12 screws were stripped, and I never knew it, as the white silicone held it in place.

Would anyone guess what the white adhesive is that Whaler used from the factory to seal and hold on the rub rail? It peeled off easily when I removed the rail.

Are there any better alternatives to self-tapping screws?

Thanks for any advice

It's likely a sealant - not adhesive. I would recommend filling those holes with epoxy resin, then reassemble.

An alternative mechanical fastener to replace self-tapping screws for holding the rub rail track to the gunwale of a Boston Whaler boat is a pop-rivet.
