I had an interesting experience today with my 2013 E-TEC 90. After about four hours of use while on plane the Water Temperature Alarm went off. I shut down the engine. There was nothing on the lower unit interfering with the water intakes. The engine itself did not feel hotter than normal to the touch.I put the engine back in the water and turned on the key to see what the engine self-check would tell me. The self check beeped as usual and had no warning lights on. I started the engine, put my hand in the strong water stream at the rear of the engine and it was cold; the lake water temp was 48-degrees-F. If it had truly been an over heat the water coming out of the engine should have still been hot. I used it for one hour more with no more problems. Unfortunately I only have the Evinrude warning lights installed at this time. I have a Chart plotter that, after I install it, will show me actual water temperature. I have not checked the owner's manual to see if that water temp warning light might have a second meaning.

I believe you must have a System Check gauge or System Check tachometer that is wired to an aural alert sounder. That must be the source of the aural alarm. Usually the alarm sounding is accompanied by one of the alarm annuciator lamps being illuminated. (I think this is what you refer to as the "water temperature warning light.")According to the owner's manual for an E-TEC 90 of model "AA" (after 2012 there are no longer model year designators for Evinrude outboards) there are two types of alarm indicators: a continuously illuminated warning lamp or a flashing warning lamp. See page 36. From your narrative, I believe the warning lamp extinguished. This means the overheat condition no longer existed. Apparently the over-temperature situation was resolved during the time you shut off the engine and it cooled. The E-TEC engine records a history of its operating temperature. If you obtained an engine history report from the EMM of the E-TEC, you could see if the temperature of the engine had been above normal operating range. The alarm codes are also logged. You could see exactly what alarm condition produced the alarm signal. The Evinrude Diagnostic software, a cable, and a Windows computer are needed to extract the history report. |

You may have picked up something while running that wrapped around the raw water intake on the lower unit and caused the overheat. When you stopped it may have simply slipped off so there was no evidence of an obstruction when you tilted the engine up. It happens around here from time to time due to plastic bags, seaweed, etc. floating around in the water.It's a real good suggestion to get the operating temperature history to see if there was actual overheat. If not then it sounds like it may have been an erroneous alarm. Rich |

One of my 90 hp E-TEC engines had a repeated false overheat indicator in cold water situations. This occurred intermittently the first season I had the engines. I took them to the dealer and he performed a software update which eliminated the problem. You may wish to take yours in for a quick check to see if there is a software update that can be performed. |

I think any firmware enhancement that was created for the E-TEC 90 of the model year or generation that Dave had would very likely have been rolled into and carried forward, so that John's model AA engine would have that update already in its firmware. |
