The imprint on my Teleflex steering cable is illegible so I cannot determine the length of the cable to purchase prior removing it to measure. It's on my 1968 Sakonnet with a 2007 Mercury 60HP fourstroke. The postings I've read mention various lengths from 14'- 18'. I believe it's either 15' or 16'. Does anyone know for sure?

Bensjoy,
Measure from nut to nut on your cable. Add 18". Round it up to the closest foot. That is the size cable (teleflex) to order.

The cable is still installed which makes it difficult to measure. I plan to buy a Teleflex Safe-T system which includes the helm, cable and bezel.

When I replaced the cable on my 1961 Eastport I went with an 18' cable which seemed to be perfect. The cable I replaced was 14' in length which was too tight for some of the radius turns to hook up to my Honda 75hp. I also bought the Teleflex Safe-T system and I am very happy with the results.

I replaced the cable on a 1970 Sakonnet last fall. The helm was a teleflex Big-T and I there was a compatable teleflex cable, so you may not need to switch everything out if you don't want to. I think the cable (hook ups for a Bearcat) was 16' but I'll confirm that tonight and post it.

If you have a Big T helm, and want to reuse it, the compatable cable is the teleflex QC II. It came with an appropriate adaptor. The length is 16 ft. At the outboard end, the threads on the new cable were opposite the old one (male versus female), so I had to get a new compatible tilt tube. Your outboard connections may be different.

The price of the complete Teleflex Safe-T package with the helm is not that much more then the cable only. As my helm is about 7 years old, thanks to your reply, I will now order the 16' package: Teleflex SS137-16.
