It my be time to bottom paint my 170 Montauk. This summer I will be bring the boat to Southwest FL (Pine Island)and she will be in the water for about a month. Most of the time this boat is on the trailer, but increasingly she is staying in saltwater for a week or two at a time in NJ and FL.

I have used Aurora Marine's VS721 bottom coat - https://www.auroramarine.com/catalog-vs721-bottom-coat.php - keeping the boat in the water for a maximum of 10 days at a time and I have had pretty good results. But I think 4 weeks will be pushing it and putting 3 coats of this "wax" on multiple times a year is not ideal.

I would be interested in any feedback and suggestions from folks that have painted bottoms that mostly trailer. What paint works well and how often do you need to repaint?

One paint that seems to be a hybrid for trailer boats is Pettit's Vivid. In the past I have used Micron CSC - but that is a pretty soft paint that I fear will not stand up to the abrasion of launching and retrieval.

Thanks for any suggestions.

On my 200 Dauntless I use Micron CSC. Boat stays in saltwater 6 months each year and is launched and retrieved about 5 times, stored on its bunk trailer the rest of the time. I get 3 years between recoating.

This is a 3500-4,000 lb load sliding on and off the bunks and I can't see any effect on the paint where the bunks would abrade the paint.

Just about any ablative paint should do. I use Hydrocoat on my trailered Sport 13 which is kept in the Gulf of Mexico for about a month at a time.

After our last trip which ended at the end of May the boat showed absolutely nothing on the bottom, not even any grass. The bare sounder transducer had at lot of "baby" barnacles on it. After being out of the water for a week they came off with a good thumbnail scraping.

West Marine has a store brand for a little less but I used Pettit. They generally offer a rebate in the Spring.

X2 for 'icon CSC. Lasts a long time, repels just about everything. I think black is the one color that doesn't look awful after just a few weeks in the water.
