What is the best way to remove [anti-fouling] paint from the hull?

Bead blasting? Grinding? Scraping?

I am looking at re-glassing the hull and then no paint, as my Whaler spends way too much time in the yard on the trailer.

Thanks!!

"Hands down, the best best tool for removing bottom paint is, your wallet"--Jim H.

Have it soda blasted, then wet sand it out and polish.

I just had the bottom of my 220 Dauntless soda blasted and then painted with a two-part epoxy paint. Attempting to restore the bottom gel coat to its original shine after the boat has been painted with anti-fouling paint can be a very expensive proposition. The cost will depend on the condition of the gelcoat after the paint has been removed. There is no way to get an accurate quote on the wet sanding cost until the bottom has been stripped. Go with the epoxy paint. It will look good, be much cheaper than wet sanding the bottom and the epoxy paint is very tough.

The difficulty in removing anti-fouling paint is related to the manner in which it was applied. If the original glossy hull gel coat finish has been abraded, as is usually recommended when applying anti-fouling paint, getting the paint removed and restoring a gloss finish may be difficult. If the anti-fouling paint was just slapped on a glossy hull, it may come off much easier.

As Jim says, the hull was sanded before bottom paint was applied.
At times, this job is given to the last guy hired and he uses a grinder with 40 grit to rough it up.
Hopefully yours was done by a more caring soul.

Good Luck!

Do it the EASY. WAY.
Re-paint the bottom with Pettit (white) Vivid or water-based Hydrocoat ECO tinted to match the original gelcoat.

I did a post about my experience a little while back under my old user name. i used chemical stripper and a sander. it took a weekend. I would do it again if I had to.
