On a 40-HP Mercury classic where is the thermostat located[?]

I'm not a Mercury guy but I would have to say somewhere on the head, probably one wire going to it.

Mercury never used a thermostat on any of the classic old two-stroke four-cylinder engines or six-cylinder engines. The first Mercury engines to use thermostats were the two-cylinder 402 and later 40's. The three-cylinder 65 and 70-HP and later propshaft-rated 50 and 60-HP three-cylinder engines also had thermostats.
