I have an aluminum tank in my 1977 Outrage and a hole just aft of the CC to view the Fuel guage. I noticed this week that the guage is no longer working. What are my options here? I assume its a float, not sure of the float is stuck or the gauage is fouled.
Its stuck on "Full" if that makes any difference, and I did pump 20 gallons in it when it read full. Its a 40 gallon tank.

The first step in diagnosis of any problem with the fuel tank level indicator gauge on a Boston Whaler boat: check that the dial pointer indicator is still in its magnetic linkage with the float sender unit. Sometimes the dial and the float units lose their magnetic link. Usually you can press the dial pointer downward--it is typically mounted with springs that push it up and way from the tank--so it will pick up the link to the magnet in the float lever.

Power this is an easy check, pull the gauge out and take a look, could be stuck. This is only a $25-45 dollar item, best to replace it, they do go bad.

Also, with any gauge on any sort of vehicle that indicates the level of the fuel or propellant or the battery, you must always tap the gauge with your finger in a gentle but firm manner to get the gauge to become unstuck and reveal the true value being indicated. This occurs almost always with any fuel level gauge in a movie. For example, in the recent movie GRAVITY, the character played by Sandra Bullock discovers that her escape pod has no fuel left when she taps the fuel gauge on the instrument panel. The gauge immediate drops from almost FULL to EMPTY, revealing the true level. Be guided by this sort of experience, and tap that fuel gauge to get it to give you the real reading.
