I've got a 1979 Newport 17' and I'm looking to freshen up the outside and instead of gel-coat or paint I'm looking at vinyl boat wrap specifically Avery Supreme SW900 GLOSS DARK BLUE METALLIC vinyl wrap. I've got a sample coming to see if it matches my 2001 Evinzuki metallic paint. I know to sand and fill any and all imperfections.
Just curious if anyone has tackled this?

Is that the same thing you see on cars and trucks like its a whole paint job ??

Yes, and bass boats, racing boats too.

Is that what NASCAR uses?
If it stays on at 180 MPH - it should be good for a Whaler!

I believe many pro race cars use Imron or equivalent. There is so much grit and small debris throw up that many paints and most vinyl would look pretty bad after a few laps at the 200 MPH plus those guys are getting. Those sponsors want their cars to look pretty.
Have you observed the numerous layers of windshield and face mask tear away sheets torn off at pit stops?

Go to joegibbsracing.com, click on "Video's" and scroll down to "Car Wrap Video's".
It is amazing.

I would not wrap a boat.
The link is to a picture of the United States Power Squadron's
On The Water trainer.
The wrap does not hold up well if it comes on contact with anything, such as a dock or trailer guide ons. Bumping something gently enough to not hurt the boat can damage the wrap. After awhile the wrap looks bad.
If you wrap plan to never have the boat come in contact with anything or plan to re-wrap every few years.

Go to the Whaler website and see every boat offers Boat Wraps and various colors.

I suspect that like everything else there are varying levels of quality of vinyl wraps. I also suspect the OEM wraps marketed by Boston Whaler are of the best quality and may be more durable than some others.
