I own a 1989 17' Super Sport. I purchased this new 25 years ago, but now that my wife and I (along with most of our friends) are into our 60's or so, not all of us can easily swing a leg over the side rails to enter or exit the boat.
I was wondering if anyone has come up with a railing modification that allows for easier entry when needed. Such as somehow hinging a section of the side rail, thus allowing it to temporarily swing out of the way when boarding.
Any clever ideas would be welcome!

On the 1988 13' super sport, there is a break in the railing on both sides of the boat between the first and second railing support posts from the bow. There is an insert in the railing which holds the two parts together, and the screws which attach the post to the railing go through both the railing and the insert (and thereby keep the break out of sight), so if you take the screws out be sure to keep the holes in the insert lined up with the holes in the railing. If the 17' has the same break and you are going to try to create an access point through the railing, this would seem to be the most logical place to do it. The break is at the second support post, hidden behind the tee that connects the support post to the railing.

I've seen this and it looked good and was functional.
Cut an opening in the rail where you want. Leave some tubing on each side of the opening. Put in a short piece of lightweight stainless steel chain connected on one end and clipped to the other with one of these or something like it: http://www.westmarine.com/buy/ suncor--stainless-steel-carabiners-with-eye--P006676837
You could also use a short piece of coated stainless cable with a swaged eye on one and a clip like this : http://www.westmarine.com/buy/ c-sherman-johnson--pelican-over-center-hooks--P002_066_002_502 on the other end instead of chain.
