Recently [an outboard engine, which perhaps is a 1997 Johnson 225-HP model] began [to show in its engine exhaust a] heavy smoke. [The engine] stalled. [To investigate the stalling problem the spark] plugs were removed [and were found to be] covered in heavy oil. [The cause of the engine stalling was] suspected to be fuel starvation. Next, the following were changed: anti-siphon [valve], primer bulb, in-line fuel filter in engine housing, and fuel lines. Engine now starts and runs for one minute and then stalls. This happens routinely after pumping primer bulb. The VRO pump is now suspected. This engine is on a 21 Outrage. [Solicits others to give advice about the cause of the stalling of the 1997 Johnson 225-HP outboard engine after it runs for one minute.]

I'd suspect over-fueling rather than over-oiling. First check the primer circuit. Make sure it's not stuck on, and that you didn't leave the manual start lever in the prime position. Then check the float, needle, and seat on the carbs.

If the engine starts and runs for one minute, then stalls, the cause is probably a lack of fuel. If the engine is a 1997 and has the original fuel pump, it may be time for a replacement.

Yes--Good advice: check the manual primer valve. They can cause too much fuel and stalling. There is a small rotary valve that must be closed. I had this exact problem on my Evinrude V6 c.1992 engine. If that manual primer valve is open, the engine won't run well and will stall.
