I'm looking for a outlet that has the bottom barrel nut that Whaler uses on the flush undersides of fish boxes and bow and access covers. The hinge on top has two standard wood screws on hinge. The three oval head fasteners screw into a phillips head barrel byt that fits flush with lid inner covers. These are brass and copper affairs that have female threads inside them. They make for flush mounting. I have looked at many sources but have yet to find any. The thread size is 24 as the top screws are 1/2-inch long with 24 thread counts. [Seeks] a source other than a Whaler dealer. I cannot fine the name of these. My guess is Whaler started using them in c.1995. They are all access cover undersides on the three outer hinge screws. The top screws are standard but [it is] the part they thread into that [is] a mystery.--Mark

I ordered the Beckson cadmium-plated flush mount barrel nuts from West Marine (model BB187-31/25); the "/25" on the end signifies 25 pieces; cost was $53 shipped to my door. West Marine will also order 12 at a time (/12). Since I needed some extra, I ordered extra. I thought anyone else who runs into this might want the part numbers. These are the OEM for all under-hatch screws with 24-thread pitch. I had to have West Marine call Beckson as I waited on the phone, as they are not in West's special order Beckson catalog.--Mark

I got the 25 barrel nuts from West Marine on special order from Beckson. They are an exact match to OEM parts. The bag of 25 was $49. The part number was BB187-31/25. [See Beckson website page]. These fit exactly with no modifaction to door holes or hatches.--Mark

With barrel nuts, it is possible to get excess caulk into the cap to the point that a hydro lock is formed. The caulk has no place to go and stops the bolt. You believe it is tight, and it is, just not enough of the bolt is inside the nut. The nut will not turn down enough to grab enough threads to be secure.
Have encountered this in a couple of manufacturer installations, so I believe it can be duplicated by DIYers
