Topic: Gear crashing while shifting

I noticed that the gears grind whenever I shift from neutral to forward or reverse. I do not drag the shifter but try to make a shift transition, not too fast and not too slow.Is this normal? To remedy this gear grinding I am thinking to revisit the idle adjustment on the engine side, perhaps there is some undue throttle while the shifter is in neutral. What are you thoughts and experience on similar issue? 1998 Mercury 150 HP 2.5L V6 2-Stroke off-shore.

Yes, that is normal. Just do not stay in the range where you hear the noise, put in reverse fairly quickly. My a 98 Mercury too. |

The slower the idle the less it will bang when shifting. |

picflight, Idle speed may be a factor, but as my father-in-law used to say which is what the boat dealer told him. "Either forward or reverse move the shift/throttle lever smartly" to move the lever timidly will cause the gears to grind. Tom from Rubicon, WI |

My last boat had a Yamaha shifter and it was very crisp and "clicked" into forward or reverse without ever grinding gears. My current Mercury shifter (circa 2004) is very vague. Once you get used to it you can usually avoid grinding. Usually.There has been some discussion of this in the past, and I seem to remember the consensus was that there was nothing you could do about it, although more recently I ran into a post on another site that indicated there were adjustments that could make it more tolerable, but I don't know if this is true or not.

Crash-box shifts are normal on Mercury gearcases, except for the VERADO engines. |

It certainly seemed to be commonplace in previous discussions.But does anyone know if the problem is in the shifter or in the engine or both? I suspect one of the latter two - otherwise we would be seeing replacements all over the place. |
