Hi All - I have been happily fishing on my 2008 Montauk 170 since I bought it. I use it offshore trolling for king mackerel, and inshore for sea trout, redfish, flounder, and sheepshead. I spend a lot of time seated when trolling and while at anchor fishing inshore. The RPS makes a decent seat, but it gets old sitting facing either straight front or back all the time. I was wondering if anyone has mounted captains chairs on the flat surface of the RPS on a 170 Montauk. Would the fiberglass of the RPS support captains chairs that could swivel, or would it need reinforcement? Thanks! |

I believe the wood location diagram for Montauk show 1/2 inch x 48 in. wide x 10+ ft. long plywood reinforcing under the nonskid floor. However, there's that main tunnel approx. in the middle that runs from the RPS to the stern area. For the wood locating diagram for a Montauk 170 a visit to http://www.bostonwhaler.com/Page.aspx/pageId/32450/Customer-Resources. aspx will get you this diagram: http://media.channelblade.com/EProWebsiteMedia/2904/1689605.pdf As for the question at hand, I think you should probably add support to the RPS base. I think it will degrade over time since the point load is higher and more focused with a swivel seat and not a person's bottom. A sheet of 3/4 ply over the top would work. It is worth looking at.
