I am looking for a motor to repower my 1975 Montauk. I've pricing out Yamaha F70s, but the price is staggering: nearly $11k for motor, controls, rigging, al prop, and sea trial. Hard to justify for a hull that is probably worth about $1k (painted, a bit damp).

I have checked all the repowering threads, and I think a 2006 E-Tec 60 hp work ok on my boat. The weight is about 240#, I believe. The power is a bit low, but I'm not interested in a go-fast boat. Still, I have a few questions about these motors:

- I seem to recall that early E-Tecs had some problems with reliability. Is 2006 in that range, and if so, is there anything I need to ask about?

- What price point should I be at for an engine this old? It comes with controls. Would $3K be reasonable? The seller doesn't know the hours, but the motor seems to have been well maintained. It was used on a yacht tender, which I assume is not the most severe duty cycle.

Thanks!

The hours are recorded in the motor's EMM (internal computer) and can be determined by an Evinrude mechanic with the appropriate software. I have a 2007 E-TEC 200 and reliability has been outstanding. Mine is used exclusively in salt water, and is in a wet slip 10 months per year.

$3k doesn't sound bad, but it all depends on condition. Can you have an Evinrude mechanic check it out and run the diagnostics?

Unless you run your boat with a full load all the time, I think 60 hp will be fine. You may lose a bit of top end, but propped correctly acceleration should be more than adequate.

Great information, Andy; thanks! I will ask the seller (a dealer) if they have somebody on hand who can read the EMM. Is there any other information stored that might provide insight into the condition?

I am glad to hear your motor has done so well for you. May I ask how many hours you have put on it? Are there any expensive jobs that can be expected at this point in the engine's life cycle?

Our Montauk is probably going to be in a saltwater wet slip year-around! It'll probably be pulled once a year for a good scrubbing and new coat of bottom paint.
