What is the length of the steering cable on a 1999 17'Outrage II? [The on on my boat has] gotten really stiff at power, but okay on the trailer. [Repair of the steering cable] looks like my next project. Thanks again!

Dave

Dave--the length is usually marked on the cable casing as part of the model number. I would look in the console.

Have you already removed the cable from the engine and cleaned and re-greased? Bet that helps.

Dave--I just checked [a 1999 Outrage 17] cable length at WHALERPARTS.COM; you need 18-foot-long steering cable.

I just wanted to update my progress. I was able to pull the old cable out and pull the new one in at the same time. Not too difficult a job. I have the helm back together, but now I have another problem. I can't get the control arm in the engine, there's not enough room. I figured as much but I was hoping I'd get lucky. I didn't. Unless someone knows a quick and easy way to lift the engine so I can attach the control cable, it is going to the shop for the finishing touches. It is mounted as low as possible, so I was going to have them raise it two holes--unless I should try one at a time. Any tricks of the trade?

Thanks and have a wonderful night--Dave

I just replaced my steering cable on my 96 17 outrage. Same problem. Had to take to a shop to remove engine. Good thing though, as two of the four engine mounting bolts were broken!

Dave -

If you have a friend to help it is doable.

To get the clearance, you need to block the trailer and use the trailer jack to stabilize the engine.

With the closed transom, you need to angle the motor. Loosen the starboard side engine bolts a little and remove the port side. This will allow you to rotate the motor.

To raise the motor, you can use the trailer jack to lower the transom and reach the new bolt holes. It has been documented on the site.

You could rent a hoist ($$ ???)

If I only lived 800 miles closer.

Phil,

Thanks for the advice, if you were only 800 miles closer! :)

Turns out I ran it to the dealer, he took care of it for me...$75 later. Dropped it off Thursday night and it was done Friday morning around 10am! Where on earth can anyone get service like that?

Now I'm all set to head out for some striper fishing, if the ocean would just cooperate!

Have a great day!

Dave
