I am having trouble upgrading the steering on my latest project, a 1968 SPORT 13. The curvature of the transom limits the travel of the steering ram. Also, the drag link length is not correct. I think I can solve the drag link length, but I don't know what to do about the interference caused by the curvature of the transom. Has anyone else solved this issue?

Look at Teleflex part # SA27055P Clamp Block Kit (standoff bracket). It's made for an application like yours.

Remote steering on the Boston Whaler 13-foot hulls with curved transoms will need to use the special steering actuator clamp. You can see one installed in this image:

In the photo, the bracket on the front of the outboard is the cable/pulley steering bracket. This looks like it was probably not the intended use for the bracket. Is there a standard part that extends the carrying handle of the outboard for attachment to the steering cable?

How a remote steering actuator will connect to a particular outboard engine is a function of the outboard engine, not a function of the design of the SPORT 13 curved transom. The cited component is for mounting the actuator to the transom. Exactly how the actuator will connect to the outboard engine is to be determined by the engine design. Many outboard engines intended for remote steering have a tiller arm extension, and usually the steering actuator is linked to the tiller arm extension.

The older OMC outboard engine shown in the illutration (linked above) appears to not have a tiller arm. Instead it seems to have a carrying handle, and some sort of adaptor plate has been installed to create a link to the steering actuator.

The Whaler in the picture, if you look closely, uses an aux.motor and therefore the steering plate connector to the engine also encompasses the attaching point for the arm for the aux motor steering. That is why it does not look like a normal one.

I do not understand the designator "aux. motor"? What does that mean? Is it some universal category of outboard engine?

I don't think you can designate the engine shown in the image {linked above) as being a "KICKER". It is the main engine. The boat does not have an auxiliary engine. Whether or not the engine is the main engine or the auxiliary engine does not affect how you will connect the steering link to the engine.

The most significant difference about the engine shown in the image (linked above) it that it is an older outboard engine and it lacks a remote steering tiller attachment point.

We are getting away from the main topic, which is the Boston Whaler 13-footer and its curved transom. The fitting of the steering actuator to the transom is what is different on these older 13-footers. How you attach to the engine will vary with the engine.

The issue is not the transom mount ball joint bracket that hold the tube, it is the connection to the outboard itself. In the photo, there is a stainless steel plate that mounts to the front handle of the outboard. The Teleflex steering cable connect to this with an axel bolt and swivel assembly. This stainless plate is what the spring tensioners would connect to if it still had cable and pulley steering. While this might "work", I do not think this is the design intent of the part. One thing that concerns me is the fact that the pivot is off center to the outboard. Can anyone provide insight into what the proper part would be for this connection?

What brand, year. model, and horsepower is your engine? If that is the real focus of your inquiry, it ought to be clearer.

the outboard is a 1983, 35HP Johnson, short shaft. It is a tiller model. Again, referencing the photo that JimH linked, the configuration is the same--meaning that there is what would be a carrying handle on the front of the engine that has the stainless steel plate mounted to it. Please let me know if that is not clear.

If I understand the problem, there is no concern or inquiry into how the steering will attach to the transom of the Boston Whaler boat. This is not of interest here. The interest is in how to attach a steering actuator of an OMC outboard engine of c.1983 and 35-HP. If that is true, we need to change the TOPIC line.

Actually removing the pulley and cable steering and installing a modern steering cable type steering is not an upgrade at all for a 13ft. Whaler.

Well, the topic line "1968 13 Sport Remote Steering" captures the whaler model, model year, and challenge encountered, albeit in a rather generic fashion. If adding "connection between Teleflex steering cable and 1983 Johnson outboard" adds specificity, then let's update the topic line. To be clear, I have a helm installed, a new Teleflex cable in place, the swivel ball device installed on the transom with the tilt tube clamped in place. I am missing the link from the end of the cable to the outboard. I have an axel bolt link, but I believe that there should be an extension from the front of the outboard to the link that is centered on the engine. If anyone knows what this part is or where to source it, I would appreciate an update.

I had the same problem on my 1966 13-footer. I fabricated a little 11-GA stainless bracket that I was able to bolt to the front of my 2003 Mercury 25-HP outboard engine that used to be a tiller. There were some holes there for something. Then I just used a 3/8-inch-bolt with nylon nuts and washers, the [3/8-inch-bolt with nylon nuts and washers] attaching the cable end not completely tighened to allow swivel action. It works perfectly. Maybe you can come up with something similar. I show a picture but it wouldn't help; your motor is not the same. Good Luck

I am thinking about redoing my 1965 13-footer this winter. If I change the steering to Teleflex cable, what is the length to order?

Apparently this problem has not been solved as of yet. The stainless part bolted to the front carrying handle is a standard part made for cable and pulley steering. A pulley is supposed to be mounted on each side of that plate. No matter it will work with modern steering. I would drill a hole in the center of that part that is made for pulley steering, then buy a standard drag link and bolt the straight end to that part and the end of the steering cable to the other radiused end. Then you will probably have to move the standoff bracket to a spot that will let the engine turn to full turn either direction. Transum curvature plays no part here. The picture just shows the cable end bolted to the pulley bracket, ther is no drag link in the picture.
