I am about the send the [combined sidelight lamp] and bow fitting from my 1988 Montauk off for re-chroming. I would like to remove the original color lens from the lamp but it appears quite well attached to the lamp. Any advice on how to safely remove this irreplaceable part?

Those lenses are not irreplaceable .They are very common parts and can easily be sourced. Those lens should be lose and POP right out. Sounds like they might be corroded in place? Do what you can to save them be if they get broken no worry about it.

I have bought replacements from A&A marine in Manistee Michigan.

Specaility Marine also has them.

Also, Marine Part Depot has them and they are only $7. I have bought hardware and now lights from them before and have always been happy with their products and customer service.

Jeff,

Thanks. My combined sidelight lens does not look like the ones you reference. In particular, the top of the lens dome is cut out, leaving an open ring space, the perimeter of which appears to be glued to the top chrome fixture.

It appears to be factory original in that state (or very well refabricated after-the-fact).

Have you or anyone else see a lens like that?

Do you have any photos you could share?

In the image (linked above) is the light brown material near the bottom of lens (in the image view) some sort of adhesive?

HC803: yes-- that's the lens! Many thanks. For those who are searching in the future, it appears to be Perko p/n 0296DP0LNS.

JimH: I presume that the substance you refer to is adhesive. The original question still stands-- how best to remove the lens? I would tend to start by trying some heat, then a solvent, and if those fail, physical force.

Has anyone successfully removed this style lens intact?

Why bother, just remove that old lens and buy this one.

I was going to get my bow light replated, and it was proving to be expensive and complicated, so I chucked the whole thing and went this route. I am more than happy with the result. BTW the old lense just fell right out and is in very good shape.

SAIL16--re your method for loosening a part held by an adhesive: I agree that some heat and use of a solvent is the best approach to loosen an adhesive.
