My shift/throttle control has developed a problem: The lever that is lifted to the "start" position appears to be partially jammed: it only moves about a half-inch upward. The engine will start normally, but the idle speed cannot be increased. The regular throttle/shift lever works normally in forward and reverse, however. I did note that, one time, when advancing the throttle through the "forward" position, is stopped part-way forward, then something made a funny noise inside the box, and the throttle moved all the rest of the way forward. Did something possibly jam, and then break?

If the remote control assembly dates from c.1980, it is about 34-years old. I recommend you disassemble it and see what is going on inside. In 30-years a lot of lubricants will dry out, plastic parts will become brittle, and metal parts can abrade and wear.I had a 1976 Mercury remote control that became rather stiff and hard to operate. It was easy to disassemble. I found the mechanism was binding and had become worn. A bit of filing and sanding of some surfaces that had become roughed up, along with new grease on many pivots and mating surfaces, restored operation to normal. You might discover something similar in your OMC remote controls. You should be able to locate a nice exploded view diagram of the assembly from the website http://SHOP.EVINRUDE.COM |

Thanks, Jim. I was a bit hesitant about disassembling the box, but I guess that's the only way, save paying shop rates for a dealer to do an exploratory on it..

In our modern world, when I take something apart now, I take pictures with my digital camera as I go. The pictures can be useful when re-assembling. They are particularly useful if the disassembly and re-assembly are separated by more than ten minutes time. |

Great suggestion... Cross my fingers and go for it...
