Hi. I'm new to this forum. My name is Clyde. I have a 1986 Montauk 17. To replace my navigation [lamps] in bow, do I go through the rub rail? Is it hard to put the rub rail back into place ? Thanks for any info.

For an answer to your frequently asked question about the path of wiring to the navigtion lamps, please read the FAQ answer #4.
You do not go "through the rub rail," but the wires do. The wiring for the lamp is concealed beneath the back vinyl flexible insert in the rub rail. The black vinyl flexible insert in the rub rail is easily removed or replaced, as long as the ambient temperature is above 85-degrees. Warming with a heat gun can be helpful on a cold day.

For clarity, you will have to go through the rubrail twice - but those holes are probably already drilled. Use the old wiring to attach the new wiring and snake it through in those spots. The rest, as described, is hidden behind the black rubber rubrail insert.

Only the wires go under or through the rub rail. Clyde won't have to fit himself in there.
The MONTAUK usually has a combined sidelights lamp at the bow. The arrangement of the holes for the wire path is clearly described in the FAQ.
Exactly where the other end of wiring will emerge from behind the rub rail is likely to vary a bit from boat to boat. The wiring should be visible. The only segment of the wiring for the navigation lamp at the bow that is concealed is the segment running under the rub rail.
