Topic: 1984 Outrage 22: Ball Scupper to Drain Rear Well

It would be under water all the time, but I imagine it would work when underway on plane. I would rather not have another bilge pump. Any other suggestions? See photos [of a ball-type scupper] at link below.

I don't know why [a ball-type scupper] wouldn't work. We had a Montauk back in the early 1980's with [a ball-type scupper] on the drain in the hull, and it worked fine. We never put a plug in the tunnel drain on the inside and it worked beautifully. If the boat was anchored, or tied to a dock, and rain fell in the boat, the ball scupper would allow the water in the boat to drain until it equalized with the water level on the outside of the hull. I guess the head pressure of the water in the boat would force water out.

When BIGMIKE0601 writes "the rear well [of a 1984 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 22 boat]", I think he is actually talking about the transom splash well, which is a very deep splash well with a through hull drain to the sea at the very deepest part.

Do what I did- foam it in and make it shallower like a normal splash well. And put a fuel tank in the fishwell and seal it up.

I did this on my old 1994 Outrage 21'. It worked quite well.

Could you clarify what you did:
--install a ball-type scupper valve, or
--foam in the deep engine splash well.

I foamed in the splash well. I plugged both the drain through the transom and the fish well drain, then installed a 29 gallon aluminum gas tank in the fish well. No more water collection devices.
