I would greatly appreciate some advice about removing the steering wheel assembly (Teleflex) from the console of a 13 foot 1988 super sport. I have removed the steering wheel cap by backing off the allen set screw, and removed the nut and washer under it. If I now use a gear puller to remove the steering wheel, is there anything I need to pay particular attention to, such as the orientation of any keys in the steering shaft or other things? Once I have the steering wheel off, is it obvious what I need to do? It looks like there are 3 bolts holding the entire housing to the console, but since I am not yet able to back the plastic cover very far away from the console (it is held there by 2 screws), I don't have a clear picture of what I am likely to see. Many thanks for your advice. |

Yes, once you get the wheel off it is all simple and obvious. Very easy. Tim |

Read: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/teleflexSeal.html The process of removing the steering wheel is illustrated in the above article. |

Thanks, Jim, I did read it before posting my question. The 1988 13 foot did not have a hydraulic pump so, as I learned this morning, after removing the wheel and bezel one will see a bracket which is attached to the console by 3 bolts and also to the steering box by 3 other bolts. Removing the bolts from the steering box frees the steering assembly from the console so that the console can be removed for refinishing. This is a great site. Thanks to Jim and others for posting all of this useful information. |

I didn't quite understand what you meant by "steering wheel assembly." With most remote steering helms there will be a steering wheel and a helm mechanism. They're two different components, not one assembly. The steering wheels are usually fairly standardized with their mounting method. They use a tapered shaft with a keyway. The helm mechanism is quite variable, from wire-rope and pulleys, to mechanical cables, to hydraulic lines. |
