I have a 1977 Montauk. In the cockpit in the bow [near] the Norman pin, the gel coat has worn to the point that the fiberglass mat pattern is showing through. The previous owner had the cockpit coated in a Rhino Liner type material that extends about 3-inch up the sides of the hull and about 3-inch up the sloped part of the bow decking. This problem area of gel coat is 8-inch above the liner material. Is there a product that I can use to seal this small area so I don't have to worry about water getting into the fiberglass mat? I don't want to paint or re-apply gel coat to the interior. The deck is smooth in that area, so I would love to find a sealer or filler type product that I could paint on or put on a wax and not have to worry about. |

I'd use West System Epoxy |

If you use the usual WEST SYSTEM 105 resin and 205 hardener, you will probably get some yellowing of the resin with age. If you want to avoid that, use 207 SPECIAL CLEAR HARDENER. The 207 product has an ultraviolet inhibitor to prevent yellowing. See: |

Will the product dry clear or with some sort of color? I would prefer clear. The appearance of the cracking is not too bad, my only concern is water infiltration. The gel coat is still covering the area, it has simply cracked in the pattern of the fiberglass mat. It is not readily visible unless you are paying close attention and looking for it. |
