Hello,
I recently purchased a Sport console for my 1967 Whaler 13 from Specialty Marine. As it was pretty expensive, I want to make sure I set it up correctly. Does anyone have any instructions on how to install the console and set up the steering and cables, etc.?
In addition, will I need to cut a hole in the side panel to route the cables?
It came with a small block of wood as well, I don't know where that is supposed to go...

I will try to help. Photos would help a bunch. If you have a blank console, you will need to cut an opening for the helm. If the hole is already in place, then you need to be sure that it is correctly sized for your helm. The old wire rope/pulley helm will be different from a Teleflex Safe T QC system in two ways. First, the hole itself is larger. I think you can download a template from the Teleflex site. Second, the gear box on the Teleflex system is offset to the left, so simply enlarging the smaller wire rope helm opening will not give you enough clearance to install the Teleflex system. Next you will have to route the steering cable through the side of the new console. with the Teleflex system, you will need one opening. Make it an oval and round over the edges so the cable turning radius is as large as possible. If you are going with the wire rope system, you will have two openings to mount the sheaves in. There are other posts on this site that cover this topic. If the loose piece of wood is about 1" X 1" X 8", it is a cleat to mount to the floor of the boat. The leg of the new console that rests on the floor has two stainless steel wood screws that go into this cleat. If it is a different size, I am not sure what it is for. You may need to trim or scribe the leg of the console to keep the unit level and square with the boat. I laid a 2X4 across the gunnels as a reference line to true the top of the console and determine how much to trim. Then used a compass to scribe a line. Hope this helps, good luck in your project.

Thanks for your advice. It is a new console, and I will drill the helm and tach holes. The block of wood is 10" x 2" x 1".
I think it may be for mounting to the seat clamps. I will need to fabricate the floor mount for the console.
