I thought [buying a 2002 Mercury 3.3-HP outboard engine which was described as being seized] might make a neat father-and-son project, but I have never done anything like this before. I'm assuming [the seized engine] would need a rebuild. How much would a rebuild kit set me back? Any thoughts? Thanks.--Dave

If you can get [the 2002 Mercury 3.3-HP outboard engine that is seized] for less then $75, [the father-son project] will be worth [the cost] even if you just take [the engine] apart to teach you son. I have found that new rings and bearings may be all that is needed. You can polish the bore and crank. I have found smaller engines are more durable as the amount of force is not as great Chances are [the previous owner] ran [the engine] without oil in the fuel.

What components are in the "rebuild kit"? Is there a specific "rebuild kit" for seized engines? Who sells them?

Thanks for the info. JimH--that just shows the level of ignorance I have when dealing with engines. I thought there might a kit similar to a carb kit for engines. Have a great day.--Dave

I got started with marine outboards with the same idea of a father-and-son project nine years ago, so I bought a 1989 Johnson 9.9-HP outboard that was being sold as a parts motor for $100. In our case the engine was not seized, but, between finding used parts on ebay, craigslist and new items online, we still have a very reliable trolling motor that moves our Outrage nicely and slowly when needed. The quality time re-building and fishing with my son, now 24, was priceless.
