My kids and I have been working on a restoration of a 1968 Boston Whaler 13-footer. We are getting ready to paint with AWLGRIP. I am tempted to deviate from the 1968 colors and paint the hull a different color, possibly a darker blue or black. I plan to never sell it. I hope this boat gets passed down to my kids. The interior wood will be OEM. I am torn [between keeping the hull color original or changing it].

Dark hull colors reveal any surface flaw. If you decide to paint the hull with a dark blue or black color, you may be surprised at how many defects will be revealed compared to what would be seen with white or off-white.

"I plan to never sell it" - Famous last words of every boat owner EVER.

No only do dark colors show flaws, scuffs and scraps more. They also require more upkeep and will need to be refinished / resprayed sooner than a lighter color. The UV and heat build up can cook the life out of a dark color fast. Even in non tropical environments.

Painting the hull two different colors is an expensive proposition with AwlGrip. You can't go wrong with Desert Tan. A couple of years ago I gave FinishMasters Automotive and Industrial Paint in Largo Fl. a sample of Desert Tan from a cutout from my Striper side console (sanded and polished).I don't remember what they charged me, but now they have the formula on file. I sprayed the interior of my 15 footer, and the color was a dead on match to the exterior original gelcoat. FinishMasters is a national company with stores all over the country. Have your local branch Call the Largo Fl. branch and ask them to send the formula to them. Talk to Phil, he is the color matcher.

The phone # of the Largo branch is 727 531 7701.

Google Finishmasters for your local branch.
There prices on Awlgrip is the best I've seen.
