I have a 1989 17 Montauk (Orignial 90hp Johnson).

The center console has two doors, one of which faces the captain and opens down. These doors are white/plexiglas style, not teak. Mine has worn, and when hitting a big wave, it has slammed open and rally smashed by toes, causing me to bleed all over the deck.

I thought replacing the plastic push button latch would be an easy fix, but there just isn't enough "grab" with the plastic latch to hold it really securely. I called Boat Outfitters, but they weren't able to offer any good solution other than replacing the same latch or a totally new door.

I only use that door for battery maintenance, as I can access the space from the door on the side. So it doesn't need to be an "easy open" solution.

Ideas or thoughts?

P.S.: Thanks to all on this forum! Lots of great information, including the Turboswing and the Windline TDL-3X ladder which have been great additions.

Put a cabinet latch on the fold down door. I think the hole they install through is 7/8". That will keep it closed while underway.

Can you provide a specific example? Will it fit the stock hole?

You probably have to make a slight hole modification and using any of the Southco or other companay marine latches offered of your style.
Southco is/was used on many BW console doors.
