[My Mercury 50-HP FOURSTROKE outboard engine] starts and runs fine to half-throttle. When given full-throttle it quits. Just prior to [the onset of this problem], some gasoline fuel was added to the engine's fuel tank from a jerry can. I suspect there may have been some water in the added fuel. Would [gasoline fuel contaiminated with water] cause these symptoms? How do I drain the fuel bowls? The boat is in the water. |

If you suspect that the fuel tank supplying fuel to your Mercury 50-HP FOURSTROKE outboard engine has been contaminated with water, I recommend you decant the gasoline from the tank, emptying the tank as much as possible. Then add a small amount of fresh gasoline to the tank, perhaps two or three gallons. Treat this new gasoline fuel with a fuel system additive that is designed to help treat water contamination. Operate the engine with the new gasoline fuel for at least one hour at idle speeds or higher. The new fuel should displace any of the contaminated fuel in your Mercury 50-HP FOURSTROKE outboard engine fuel system. If the problem you are experiencing was being caused by fuel contaminated with water, you should be able to remedy this with new fuel. I recommend this approach before you undertake disassembly of the engine fuel system. When you ask for advice like "[h]ow do I drain the fuel bowls," I tend to think that perhaps you are not completely familiar with the fuel system of your outboard engine. I don't recommend beginning disassembly of the fuel system until you have greater familiarity with it. A good way to gain knowledge about your outboard engine and its systems is to purchase the factory service manual. I recommend this for anyone trying to perform their own repairs and service to their outboard engine. For Mercury outboard engines there are three tiers of fuel system treatments available. I describe the three products in an article posted several years ago and still available in the archives. See Mercury Fuel Treatments: A QUICK Look |

I am familiar with outboard engines. I'm not in front of my outboard engine at this time and don't know what the access to the drains is like. Would water in gasoline fuel cause [a Mercury 50-HP FOURSTROKE outboard engine] to run fine to half-throttle and bog and die at full-throttle? |
