I have an 82 17' Montauk with a Johnson 90 (no power trim/tilt). Am thinking of retrofitting one. Anybody have experience with that, stories to swap, been there, done that?

The owner's manual for my '79 Johnson 85 hp shows the power tilt/trim on my motor as an added option. It looks and works great. Perhaps you can find someone with a blown up motor but working t/t. Try posting on scrapoutboards.com. The folks there have been helpful, and I see a lot of oddball stuff for sale.

Two alternatives to Andy's excellent suggestion is call around to some of the local Merc dealers and outboard service shops, you never know what might be collecting dust taken off a blown engine for parts. Second the CMC aftermarket t&t I hear is pretty nice for the price --- added bonus a slight set back putting the prop in cleaner water --- lowest price I have found is Cabela's about $425 w/o gauge plus shipping ---

Just my .02 - A year or so ago - I thought the PT&T on my early 80's Johnson 150 was going. I spoke with my mechanic and he said the price on replacement units was impossible ($600-1,000 as I recall). It turned out that it was just an relay, but had me looking at new motors for a while there. With that in mind the Cabela's price seems like a bargain.
