I'm close to buying a new 2001 13' whaler sport. I'll use it mainly for fishing and crusing around a mountain lake with two people (who total about 350 pounds.)No towing of water skiers. The decision is between the Merc 4-stroke 25hp or, for almost 2 grand more, a Merc 4-stroke 40 hp. I am leaning towards the 25, and hoping that it's fast enough (25mph?) and that I can avoid a separate trolling motor. Will it still be fun? Would it be usable with 4 people? How about 2 people and near-shore ocean situations? BTW, I can only tow a maximum of 2000 lbs including all gear.

Hi David,
I live just south of you and bought a 13 Sport in April. It has the 40-4 stroke and it is a great little boat. With 3 people and gear aboard it ran 36 mph on Lake Cachuma and is very easy on gas. The 4 stroke is docile and quiet. From what I have heard the 25-4 stroke is probably adequate most of the time but I have not tried one.

Let me know if you want a ride sometime. Try Schock Boats in Newport Beach for the best price.

I think the 25 would be perfect for the mountain lake/near-shore ocean situation and two people. I don't think the 25 would work well with four people - you would probably have to run at full throttle just to get up on plane with four. The 25 trolls very well.

I owned a 2000 with a 25 4-stroke. The 25 with 2 people on board and some gear ran 24-24 statute MPH. I never ran it with more than 2 people onboard, but I bet you would have difficulty running it with the 25.

I have the 13 Sport with a 40 HP 4 cycle on lake in CT and I love it. I would really like a dedicated trolling motor but I am reluctant to modify the boat.

By the way the Mercury 40, and probably the 25 as well, are made by Yamaha.

I think the 25hp would be adequate for your needs. The 13 gets crowded when fishing with more than two people; and if you've got four on board, you can still 'harbor cruise' without getting on plane.

I know you missed out on the 2-stroke 30hp in CA, but just so you don't feel bad--it shakes like crazy at trolling speeds.

To clarify my earlier post, if you are using 2 people you will be fine, but with 4 you might have trouble with the 25.

On ht eother hnad 4 people on that boat would be cozy. Doable but cozy.

My wife's aunt used to have a 13 Whaler with a 25-HP. You could even ski behind it, if you were petite.

That engine was a pull-start. I don't recall the boat having a battery. It made for a simple rig, and saved the weight of the batttery, too.
