I am rebuilding a 16/17 ft 1972 whaler. It currently has an old 40 Johnson. I want to upgrade but want some suggestions from those with larger engines.

I have told this a few times and so have others. The olde hulls were designed when engines were lighter(1972 100 Evinrude weighed like 298lbs). I would stay on the lighter end of the scale. To get the max hp I would go with a 90hp Yamaha that weighs approx 260+lbs. Will do low-mid 40's and run like a sewing machine. If going 4 stroke limit yourself on the weight issue(70hp suzuki weighs 335lbs).

Concur with Bigshot here 100%, I have a 67 Nauset and am re-powering with exactly whatI took off - 90 Yamaha. Looked at the 4S models but decided that the extra weight / cost was not value add for me.

Good Luck

I just re-powered my 1973 16/17 with a 50 hp Suzuki 4 stroke (240 lb.) I was concerned about lack of power and pick-up, but was pleased to see that the boat took off fine and with 3 large prople is able to cruise at 28 - 32 mph very easily (this is all the speed I need). This engine is fuel injected so that it is much better 'out of the hole' than a 4 stroke carb. engine.

Guess I had better put a vote in for Mercury.

I have a Merc 50 HP 4 stroke, 224 lbs, on my 99 Montauk. Motor is mounted 2 holes up and running a 13 pitch prop. Ran it fully loaded last weekend with 750+ lbs of people, gear and fuel. It was on plane quickly and toped out at 32 mph at 5600 rpm.

Could have trimed it up a bit more and picked up a little but the wife was saying slow down.

It is a good combination for me.

Dick
