A question for you experts. I have a 60hp Johnson (1990, No VRO). Starts right up. Bought it 6 years ago. The problem is this: Off and on since ownership the hot whistle comes on after cruising over 4000 RPMS for more than a few minutes. I've had mechanics place a new water pump and impeller, clean out the water passages and take out the thermostat. They even moved the outtake of the Pee Hole to the top to make sure water is getting to the top cylinder. It gushes water out all correct places when running. I have even replaced the sensor. When the whistle blows I turn it off and feel the water out of the holes in back. Extremely HOT. What is it? Any takers?

Ahoy, Masbama. Have you run a compression check? You might have a blown head gasket.

Other possibilities: Link and Synch between carbs and ignition may be off (too much timimg advance). You might also be running just a bit lean at high rpm. That could be caused by slightly gummed jets or low float levels in you carbs.

Good luck.
