I have just found a mint 1969 sport. It has a 20" shaft motor mounted on the 15" transom. The engine has been raised and bolted through original holes and appears to be at the correct height. The weird thing is the U bracket on the engine is hanging in mid air. The cable steering is is hooked up and works fine. The question is, does the top of the engine U bracket need to rest on the top of a transom? The person with the boat is an old lady, it was her late husband's. Thanks Jay |

Jay, from what you descripe it may not be a sound mounting! Suggest you get some on the spot advice so as to avoid hull damage or loss of motor! Then again, it may be fine... happy Whalin'... Clark ... Spruce Creek Navy |

Clark, the engine is a 1989 Johnson 40hp that has been on the boat since it was new. I see no cracking or any indication of any rework or repair. It just looks weird hanging up there like it is. Regards, Jay P.S. I already bought it, the deal was too good. |

JFM, When I used to run the small stock and modified outboard hydros, it was commonplace to raise and lower the outboard by shims on the transom. Occasionally they would come out during a run and the motor would be sitting an inch or so up in the air as you describe. I never had a problem with it unless one of the motor clamps were loose, then the whole motor would tilt one way or the other and create some undesirable performance characteristics... <g> When the clamps start getting up to the edge of the transom is where your limit is. If you buy the boat, I would put a strip of 2x4 up there to have the motor rest on it. I'm guessing you can only adjust it up a couple inches at most. Certainly not up 5" like you want to achieve the ideal trim. But then if you aren't performance oriented, who cares... Good luck, Dave S. |

So now you have 2 13's with 40hp but yet you want to sell the 1990 because it is too old but yet you buy an older engine and boat. What gives there Jay, fixer and sell her? What constitutes a good deal if you don't mind me askin'. |

Nick, I'll keep this one to myself, price that is. This one is like new. It's a one owner. Motor doesn't look like it's been used. She fired right up first try, smoked like hell then ran like a kitten. Has VRO and remote oil tank. The 1972 sport's motor has been screwed with. I'll probably build up the transom on the 1969 with teak and keep her, pardon me, keep IT, and sell the 1972. Regards, Jay |

Nick, the 1972 has a 15" transom that I built up with teak. The 1990 40 erude is a 20". I just got back from a dealer and picked up a 2000 Yammy 40 hp 15" 4 stroke for $2500.00 with controls. Looks like lady luck is back again. Also I paid $2000.00 for the 1969 boat, motor and trailer. Regards, Jay |

Drop the Yamie on the 69 and forget about keeping it original. Put the 40 on the 72 and either sell it or keep it for beating on. Give me your old 40 for all the sound advice I have given you:) |

Nick, "granny" called me last Friday to pick up the original motor, a mint pull start 1969 Johnson. She forgot about it. So as I write, the 1969 is being refitted with the original 1969 Johnson. I have a Whaler collector looking at it tomorrow. The 1989 Johnson is sold to a friend of my father-in-law. Then the new Yammy will probably go on the 1972 after I cut the teak out of the transom. So that leaves the 1990 40 Erude for sale if every thing falls into place. What do you think the Erude is worth? The dealer that sold me the Yammy says ask $750. Regards, Jay |

That engine is worth about $1200 with controls. Maybe more if Really clean. I did not want to post it if you were gonna put ad here. Don't even think of letting it go for $750. |

So I get it for free? You are soooo generous Jay. I got the engine I wanted for my 13'. Just gotta finish the wood and buff her out before rigging it up. |

Bigshot, the 1969 package is gone, the 1989 Johnson is gone. I'll be upgrading the 1972 with the new Yammy 4 stroke and new trailer. I had a no show on the 1990 40 Erude. So I have it available. You are not seriously interested in it are you? If it's worth $1200 how about $1000. Regards, Jay |

Did you purchase the Yammi from Tradewinds Marine? If so, this may have been my old motor. I switched to a 25HP 4-Stroke w PT&T so it had to be 20" Shaft. Installed a fixed jack plate. Just curious, was it Tradewinds? Rob |

RH, Yes I did buy it from Bill at Tradewinds. Bill and I go back a long way ( graduated from Elder together). He told me it was virtually new and belonged to a very meticulous Boston Whaler owner. He thought it only had about 2 hours on it. Does it? They also told me they gave you $3,000.00 trade for it. Did they? I bought the motor, controls, installed for $2550. Regards, Jay |

Rob, P.S.: Bill told me you were almost as meticulous (picky) as me. |
