I just purchased a 1963 whaler. It has a 20" shaft motor on it now....with some conversion, will a 25" shaft motor work?

Thanks!

Welcome aboard Jaun! The 1963 transom is made for a 15" motor unless the transom has been built up, then it can use the 20". The 25" won't work unless you can bring that transom up another 5"s. Also the boat is rated for a max. HP of 40. I don't know if 40 HP's are made in 25" shafts.

Dear jay,

Thanks for the info. Question...how much should the prop be below the level of the hull when installing a motor on the whaler. Do you have a C/L to bottom of hull measurement? (Would like to make sure the new motor is on right)

Take Care,

Juan Perez

Jaun, the top fin above the prop. should be your guide. That's where you want it to be in reation to the bottom of your transom.

Are you certain of the 25-inch shaft dimension? That would end up mounting at least 10-inches above the original transom on a 1963 13-Whaler. That sounds like too much elevation to me.

He means 20" Jim. they don't make 25" until 90 or 115hp.

They make 9.9-25hp kicker motors in 25" shafts,so he may have one of those.
