I just bought a 9 foot whaler tender( not the squall).. needs some TLC but seems in good shape... coast guard plate calls for 5 hp max but transom has been drilled which leads me to suspect a bigger motor has been used in past.. the only other 9 footer I have seen has an 8 hp motor on it but I have never seen the owner... question is has anyone any experience with the boat and what is their opinion of a 6 hp or 8 hp motor or should I just stick with a 5 hp? Thanks

Stick with 5 or less. The smaller a boat is the more sensitive it is to too much power.

I am probably not going to make a move until I igure out what size motor I should use but it would be helpful if you could tell me a little bit about your 8 hp for sale. Thanks

If you want your boat to get on plane (which is it not designed) you'll need at least an 8. If your're not interested in getting on plane then dont bother with more than 5hp.

My 8hp is a rebuilt 1988 mercury. short shaft. had it on my 11' whaler then replaced it with a biger one. Put a tiller on it. The tiller came off of an 1990 15hp the (tiller has 3 hours on it) The outboard has never had a prolbem I would keep it but I have no other boat to put it on. Till the last 3 years it was used in a fresh water lake in Maine it was on my whaler when i got it. used in salt water here but well flushed and was not left in the water. would come with 1 5gallon gas tank and a gas line.

Hi gregc,
I started with a Honda 7.5 on my 9' tender and it would plane with one person. I then changed the cam in the engine and it put out 10 hp. The boat would then plane with 2 people and was a great set up. Eventually a 25 hp Merc was bolted to the back and converted the 9' tender to a 9' rocket. There is a photo of it at http://home.pacifier.com/~randb/BostonWhaler.htm
Of course the 25 is way too much power and is not recommended.

Roger:
I thought I saw the most overpowered whaler in the late '70's: a 15' sport with a 115Hp Merc (yes, the big inline). I must now give you the crown for the absolute craziest display of a floating engine to ever wear the foam hull. Wish I could drive it for an hour. BTW, I gotsta know, how fast?

DaveH, I can't speek for rodger but I have a 9' Whaler with a 2001 25HP merc, a 6" setback jack plate and trim tabs and custom steering, throttle controls mounted on the seat-bench. The top speed is (gps) is 41mph, that is in perfect conditions (light chop with a 10kt head wind).

As for gregc I would sugest 5 hp....and anything more than that you're just wasting fuel.

Roger, pass the crown to Speedywhaler. He's a sick puppy ;)

Was ON a 15' in Barbados with a 115 Evinrude ocean Pro. Absolutely sick! Not a stress carck on it and all they used it for was waterskiing. 1978 hull with a 1998 engine.

DaveH,
I agree, SpeedyWhaler gets the crown! I didn't think anyone else was crazy enough to put a 25 on a 9'. We sold our 9' rocket after I flipped the boat and made S's out of the rods (water does not compress very well). Be careful SW

A 25hp Merc is insane on a 9ft tender, my dockmaster has one and he is in constant danger of flipping. Trying to lift that little tender by way of a davit is a handful and a half (it tips and leans very bad). My suggestion is to get a 6hp or 8hp twin cyclinder, that way it is light enough to move around, but powerful enought to plane off.

I sold a 1976 Newport with a 115 Yamaha 2 years ago. Boat ran 52 with 1 person, 2 gallons of gas, notched up 2 holes, and a screaming roostertail. I just bought an 88 Montauk with a 100 GT with shaved heads, we'll see, still sanding the teak before we varnish it.

Swellmonster,
Are you the guy with the 18 jumping those huge waves on the West Coast?

About 5 years ago I was jumping some 6' swells in Boca Inlet and getting absolutley stupid air. I went vertical, submarined the 115 Yamaha, and the fuel tank (28g plastic) pinched the fuel line and stalled the motor. Didn't sink of course, but swamped the boat with a dozen good sized waves before getting towed in by 2 Waverunners. No damage to boat or motor

Lesson #1....NEVER jump into the wind.

Lesson #2...if you do get vertical and lose the gas tanks out the back....get them before the engine runs out of gas.

Lesson #3....If you do flip, tell your father it was stolen.

1. Thank God there was no wind, just swells!
2. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the loose tank.
3. Dad wasn't home, had boat cleaned before he got there

I had a friend with a 15-70 OMC who used to jump like a maniac. I watched him get vertical, lose the fuel tank, and spin around before he was out of gas and pick it back up!

In my wildest dreams, I had never considered a 25hp on the 9 foot tender, my 13 foot whaler uses a 25 and I know of more than a few with a 15hp mounted on the 13 footer,
the answers I got from you all seem to be about evenly split between 5hp and a 6 or 8.
Accordingly, I'll probably make the decision based to some extent on price. Thank you all for your time and please let me know of any further insights.

Boca...read rule #2.

Did that in Barnegat inlet after hitting a 6' breaker in a 13. Lost both tanks out the back. had to retrieve quickly, then worry about explaining where the anchor went.

Dad busted me riding the surf one day.....how the hell did I know he would be working on the roof of the house. Nothing more exciting than dropping in...in a whaler, just like surfing...kinda.

I guess that the Marketing Suits at Whaler never thought about the converse situation: saving the whaler from the 13 year old kid! Bigshot, this means you. BTW, I get this vision of you riding the big surf (35-40') on the North Shore of Hawaii, with this huige grin on your face.

Ditto!

Gas tanks float.

Boca...you seem worthy, I'm too old for this crap now, probably get shin splints or something.

I replied to your ? about the RMS: 51 at 5100 rpm, but it handled like crap. No steering, unbelievable torque and it would blow out with any wake.
