I have a 1970 Nauset with the original motor, a near mint 1970 85 Johnson. Runs great, but I have a curiosity about repowering. Some questions:

1. How does HP compare betweeen 1970 and Today? Is HP apples to apples?

2. Will a 70 perform well, or will a 90 be necessary.

I am looking at Johnson 2 and 4 strokes, Ficht Evinrudes, and Classic Mercs. Any opinions?

Howdy, RWill.

In 1970, your Johnson was rated at the flywheel. Since the early '80s most outboards have been rated at the prop.

So, 1970 "apples" are about .8 to .9 2002 "apples".

The 16/17 Whalers I have had have performed very well with 70hp, and not much better with 90 or 100hp.

My 1980 Montauk sports a 2001 Suzuki DF70. It will go 38.5mph and cruise at 30 with two adults, 28 gallons of gas, fishing tackle and a full 94qt. Igloo. I think the Nauset would be faster.

Several other Montauk owners here have powered with the Suzuki/Evinrude/Johnson DF70 four stroke and I think they all are as much in love with this great engine as I am.

Thanks. What is a 70 Suz/Johnson/Evinrude going for? Is it an EFI?

Best Montauk power for the buck. About $6k total but shop around for a leftover or a Evinrude leftover. Yes they are EFI and I love mine. Your 85 is about a 70hp but eats twice the gas. I run about 39 with my evinzuki 70 and from what I hear the honda 90's are about 41mph. A good 90 merc/omc 2 stroke will maybe hit 44+. Do the 4 stroke.
