I need help with this motor. It ran last month, now I want to winterize it. The motor has had problems starting periodically.

Checked battery: OK
Wiring harness: ok
Control box: ok

I turn switch and hear whistle then dead.

All wires seem to be ok. solenoid is ok

don't know????any help would be great.

WB, When you say 'whistle' is that the starter spinning, but the bendix is not popping up to engage the flywheel? Or is the engine cranking and not starting? Have you tried manually starting the engine? Bob

Does it turn over? If so does it try to start? Is the electric choke working? If not is there a manual choke on the engine? If you can get it to turn over and it won't fire, is it getting spark and gas? Spark is easy to tell by removing the plugs and laying them against the engine and have someone turn it over. If the plugs spark, you're ok. Are the plugs wet? If so they may be too wet so try a new set. If you have spark and you have gas, you then have to see about compression. That requires a guage that you can buy at any autoparts store for $20-25. Start with those questions and get back to us.

I can manually start the motor with a wire running from the postive terminal to starter, jumping starting the motor. It engages fires up and the sort. I just won't fire up when I turn the key. Choke and "whistle" work fine. Just dead when trying to turn over electrically with keystart. I have replaced the solenoid, one powerpak, wiring harness, battery etc. The old owner had taken the wiring harness off the motor. I had to find one at a junk yard but years of corrosion and the like, I bought a new one.

It doesnot seem to have a ground somewhere.

Have you cracked the control box and looked closely at the backside of the ignition switch yet? It has a bunch of connectors and one may be bad.
